The basics

See rare editions of Joyce’s work during a visit to the James Joyce Tower. Hear stories about the tower’s original purpose: defense against Napoleon. The tower never saw any action, but a trap door to the artillery storage room below, narrow windows, and rooftop gun deck remain. Don’t leave the museum without climbing the narrow winding staircase to the roof to take in views over Dublin Bay.

When to get there

The most popular time of year to visit Dublin is during the summer months when the days are long and light extends well into the evening. This is an especially good time of year to visit the James Joyce Tower as it is on the coastline and provides a nice starting point for a walk along the water. Hours for the tower are slightly reduced during the winter months.

The Forty Foot Swimming Hole

The James Joyce Tower is located near another popular landmark, the Forty Foot swimming hole. For generations, Dubliners have come to this traditional bathing place to go for a dip in the Irish Sea (previously it was a swimming club for gentlemen only). Stone steps lead down into the water and during any time of year visitors will see locals entering the water for a swim.
