The basics

Famara Beach offers something for everyone. Families and sun-seekers come to lounge on the sandy shores; hikers head up through the dunes to trek along the sea cliffs; and adrenaline seekers can enjoy water sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing, or try paragliding and hang-gliding from the cliffs. While strong currents and riptides make the beach unsuitable for swimming, it’s a great place to surf and there are waves suitable for all levels. A number of surf schools hold classes along the beach for beginners, while pro surfers head further out to surf the beach breaks.

Surfing in Lanzarote

Nicknamed the ‘Hawaii of Europe’ for its excellent surf and year-round waves, Lanzarote is a popular place to catch some waves or learn to surf. Along with Famara Beach, notable surf beaches include Orzola and Jameos Del Agua in the north, and Arrieta, just to the south; all of which have calmer beach breaks suitable for beginner surfers. Experienced surfers can challenge themselves at the notorious reef breaks of La Santa beach, and El Quemao, which has been touted as one of the most difficult in Europe.
