3 Days in Seville for First Timers

Organisiert von Lori Zainowho traded Manhattan’s busy lifestyle for Spanish siestas and sunshine 15 years ago.

Seville is the heart and soul of Andalucia, home to a blend of Spanish and Moorish history and a lively tapas foodie scene. Whether it’s your first visit or your 10th, there’s nothing quite like wandering the city’s cobblestoned streets, taking in the magnificent architecture that shines beneath the Spanish sunlight.

No trip to Seville is complete without visiting its magnificent tourist attractions, but the city’s magic also lies within its hidden corners—chatting with a local on a park bench, inhaling the scent of blooming orange trees, or slipping into a local bar for a sherry nightcap after a traditional flamenco show.

Seville is scorching in the summer and pleasant in the winter, and it rarely rains. Bring sunblock.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a visit to the Barrio Santa Cruz, Seville’s former Jewish Quarter, where most of the city’s main tourist attractions are.

Day 1

Seville is easily explored on foot. Start in the Santa Cruz neighborhood at the Plaza del Cabildo, a picturesque square home to the massive Gothic Cathedral. Seeing the inside of the church is a must—walk up several steep ramps to reach the top of the Moorish bell tower for panoramic views of the city.

Then, stroll over to the banks of the Guadalquivir River to check out the 13th-century Torre del Oro, a gold-topped tower that was once a prison. Enjoy Seville’s architecture from the water with a riverboat cruise, an excuse to rest your feet after a long day of walking.

Day 2

Any tourist would enjoy a visit to the city’s Royal Alcázar of Seville, though Game of Thrones fans will be particularly interested—many of the show’s scenes were filmed in the palace’s winding interior complex and stunning, landscaped gardens. Make the most of your time with a guided tour and skip-the-line tickets.

Check out María Luisa Park and Seville’s former tobacco factory before enjoying the sunset at the beautiful Plaza España, with its romantic canals, charming bridges, and Andalucian tiles. Cap off the evening with a can't-miss flamenco show—after all, the art form originated in Andalucia.

Day 3

Spend the first half of the day learning more about the history of the Jewish Quarter in Seville. Alternatively, visit a nearby olive oil farm or visit the historical sights of Cordoba, just 45 minutes away by train.

No visit to Seville is complete without bar-hopping to enjoy Spanish tapas. Spend the evening eating and drinking your way through town; go with a local guide to discover hidden spots and learn more about Seville’s food culture.
